“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Matthew 11: 28-30

Jesus invites us to come to him and cast all our cares and burdens on him. What a wonderful invitation! When you hear this, it feels like leaving your big heavy bag down on the floor and slopping on the couch to rest and breathe. This heavy bag may mean difficulty at work, a broken relationship, or physical illness that worries us and keeps our hearts anxious and heavy.

However, Jesus does not want us to put our bag down on the floor just yet and do nothing. He tells us to take his “yoke” and learn from Him. Jesus teaches us to be like him. He tells us to be gentle and stop our whining and complaining. He tells us to be humble and accept this “yoke” that he has for us -be it work, relationship or physical illness. This humble acceptance and openness will make the “yoke” light.

It is when we are humble that Jesus can show his power and work a miracle in our lives. Jesus will inspire you with an idea on how to manage your problem at work; he will soften your heart to forgive and heal your broken relationship; and he will give you courage and resources to complete your treatment. This “yoke” is something we work on with God on our side.

“I cast all my cares upon you

I lay all my burdens down at your feet

And anytime I don’t know what to do

I will cast all my cares upon you”
